Head position

Where you carry your head relative to your trunk

While you run, your head stays surprisingly still. Runify Motion measures how far it sits forward of your trunk line, across the whole clip.

Descriptive measure: the app gives you the value and explains it, with no score and no verdict.

Absorption: the trunk line and the head

How to read the value

0° means your head is in line with your trunk; the higher the value, the farther forward your head is.

It’s a descriptive measure: the app gives you the value with no score. From the side, nose, ear and shoulder are close together: a few pixels of error are worth a few degrees, and hair or a cap can get in the way.

What it can mean

There are very few studies on head position in running: the value describes how you run; it doesn’t judge it.

What is known is that the head stays stable while running, with forward and backward movement kept within about twenty degrees (Pozzo, Berthoz and Lefort 1990); there are no reference values for running.

Studies: Pozzo, Berthoz and Lefort 1990.

To measure it well

The head is measured best with the camera at trunk height and your face clearly in profile.

What the app suggests

Nothing to try: the value describes how you run; it doesn’t judge it.
